Antique jewelry carries interesting history, the inspiration of the original maker as well as the reception it has received over the years. We each bring the weight of our own experience and knowledge whenever we view art, and it is common to have conflicting emotions.
Giulio Nardi was a Venetian goldsmith who founded the Nardi jewelry line and gallery. It is still in the family having passed to Giulios’ son, Sergio, then grandson, Alberto.
It is said that Giulio’s possible inspiration for this style was from Shakespeare’s Othello. These Nardi brooches were embraced as souvenirs by celebrities who traveled to Venice in the early twentieth century, and many pieces were commissioned as a result.
