Peridot (pronounced pair-uh-doe) is the gem form of Olivine, a magnesium iron silicate mineral of the forsterite-fayalite family, with the amount of iron being responsible for the color. It occurs for the most part as an eye-clean gem with excellent transparency and is typically faceted. There is no known treatment to improve its color or clarity and therefore is not heat-treated or enhanced in any way.

Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August. It is also the stone given to celebrate the 16th year of marriage.
Peridot is one of the few gemtones that occur in only one color; an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron that is contained in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. It is 6.5 -7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Large peridot are rare.
